Mullin, Rodman top Hall’s ’11 class
Chris Mullin’s basketball journey began on Fashion Show Collections the playgrounds of New York and brought him to stardom at St. John’s and the Golden State Warriors.
Yesterday, it carried him to the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Mullin, St. John’s all-time leading scorer and a five-time NBA All-Star, headed the Hall’s Class of 2011, along with Dennis Rodman, the former Bull and Piston as well-known Belts,Scarves & Accessories for his flamboyant lifestyle as for his two NBA Belts Defensive Player of the Year awards and five title rings.
He also played for the Spurs, Lakers and Mavs.
Mullin, a product of Xaverian High in Brooklyn, scored 2,440 points with the Johnnies from 1981-85, carrying the Redmen (as they then were known) to the Final Four in 1985. He was drafted in the first round (seventh overall) by the Warriors.
The 47-year-old will be making his second trip to the induction ceremonies in as many years. He was enshrined last summer as part of the 1992 U.S. Olympic basketball team.
Also part of the class were: coaches Tex Winter, innovator of the triangle offense, Philadelphia University’s Herb Magee and Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer; longtime NBA and ABA star Artis Gilmore; former Portland Trail Blazers center Arvydas Sabonis; Olympic gold medalist Teresa Edwards; Harlem Globetrotter “Goose” Tatum; and Celtic Tom Sanders.
Rodman may have been the most surprising new Hall of Famer — with no one more surprised than Rodman himself.
“It’s just unreal,” said Rodman, who believed his extracurricular activities — including donning a wedding dress to marry himself and kicking a photographer in the groin — would overshadow his on-court feats.
But voters looked past his outlandish antics and focused on a career in which he became one of the best rebounders ever.

NBA Picks: Orlando Magic at New York Knicks

The Orlando Magic is in New York Wednesday hoping to extend its current win streak to four-straight. Covering the spread has been a different story for the fourth place team but bookmakers have hung a small price on the Magic (-1.5) and set the Over/Under betting line at 202.5 points.
Orlando (45-26) has just one ATS cover in their past nine games and when laying small points on the road the team is 2-8 ATS in its past 10. New York (35-35) has thrived as a small dog, going 13-4 ATS in its past 17 chances but chemistry issues and a lack of defense have dragged this club down.
NO FINISH
On Monday against Boston the Knicks led by 14 at the half before giving up 59 second-half points and losing straight-up by 10. The defensive woes of the league’s third-most generous team (105.5 PPG allowed) make it a risky proposition backing New York against any opponent and if you’re looking for defense, don’t look to the Knicks newest star.
New York is 7-9 SU since acquiring Carmelo Anthony and 1-6 SU/ATS in the past seven. Four of the losses were against teams with a losing record and what was originally meant to be a fight for home court in the playoffs has turned into a guaranteed first round death match against one of the top three seeds
OVER/UNDER PICK
The Over/Under for tonight’s contest at Sportsbetting.com opened at 203 and was bet down a half-point within the first few hours. Following a run of three-straight unders, we think betting this game to go “Over” could offer the best value。
Orlando’s biggest problem the past few weeks has been turnovers and after giving up the ball 20 times against Cleveland, we look for HC Van Gundy’s team to be much more focused vs. New York’s leaky D. The Knicks are still more than capable of scoring into the triple digits and the last thing Orlando wants to do is increase their chances。

Angels fall to Dodgers, 5-0, in spring game
AT THE PLATE: Top prospect Mike Trout grounded a single up the middle in the first inning for his first hit of the spring. But the Angels, playing a lineup consisting primarily of rookies, managed just three other singles while striking out 11 times. They did run the bases well, though, with Andrew Romine swiping two bases in the fifth and Chris Pettit and Jean Segura stealing one each.

ON THE MOUND: Scott Kazmir gave up three runs in two innings but pronounced himself pleased with his command and mechanics, two things that plagued him last season. Four relievers followed, combining to hold the Dodgers to two runs and three hits over six innings. Fernando Rodney pitched a scoreless inning in which he struck out two.

EXTRA BASES: All-star outfielders Torii Hunter, Vernon Wells and Bobby Abreu missed the Angels’ first two Cactus League games, but Manager Mike Scioscia expects all three to play against Oakland on Monday in Tempe.

Munchak surrounding himself with familiar faces
Is Mike Munchak hiring a coaching staff or organizing a reunion of the Oilers/Titans franchise?
The addition of Chris Palmer is a blast from the past. Based on his recent resume, Palmer’s top qualification for the job is that he coached wide receivers for the Houston Oilers back when Munchak was playing for the organization.
No disrespect to Palmer, but it’s not every day that you have to choose between being head coach and general manager of the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League or coordinating an NFL offense.
This is the 16th coaching stop in Palmer’s 39 years of coaching. He’s touched them all — college ball, NFL, CFL, USFL, UFL. All of which begs the question: Does the guy have something against the Arena League?
Barely one week into his tenure as Titans coach, I don’t know if Munchak is making phone calls to coaching candidates off a Rolodex or just crossing names off his Christmas card list.
Just wondering: What’s Jerry Glanville doing these days?
Munchak would have us believe it is mere coincidence that his three hires thus far are people linked to his past.
“There must be a reason it is happening that way, but that is not a prerequisite when I talk to someone,” he said. “I’m open to people that fit.”
Munchak says he wants a comfort level with his assistants. So far, so good — he’s surrounded himself with familiar faces.
To be fair, though, the newest additions have experience with other organizations.
Bruce Matthews broke into the coaching profession with the Houston Texans two years ago. New defensive coordinator Jerry Gray has been on three NFL staffs and made a cameo appearance at the University of Texas since he was last with the Titans. Palmer has made the rounds since leaving the Oilers organization in 1993.
And it’s not like Munchak had unlimited options at offensive coordinator. He wanted to talk to Bill Callahan but the Jets denied approval. Ditto for Mike Tice and the Bears. There aren’t a lot of offensive geniuses out there that are not under contract right now.
Besides, Munchak isn’t necessarily thinking long term. With transition at quarterback and with the likelihood of a lockout that will eliminate some if not all offseason meetings and workouts, the Titans need an experienced hand that can adapt quickly.
“It is not what we need three years from now or four years from now,” Munchak said. “It is what I think the Titans need right now on the offensive side of the ball to pull this team together for what we have in place.”
There will be a period of adjustment. Palmer is coming from a league that has a handful of unique rules, one of which restricts pass rushing. In the UFL, you have to count “One Mississippi … Two Mississippi … Three Mississippi” before you can rush the quarterback.
OK, it’s not quite that bad. UFL rules mandate a four-man defensive line, with a maximum of six players rushing the passer on a given play.

Verizon iPhone will be announced Tuesday: report
The news many consumers have been waiting for, Apple’s iPhone carried by Verizon Wireless, will be announced Tuesday, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.
“The largest U.S. wireless carrier will make the long-awaited announcement at an event Tuesday in New York City, a person familiar with the matter said Friday,” the Journal reported, although there was no word on when the iPhone would be available for sale.
It will be the first time since the iPhone was released in 2007 that it’s sold by more than one carrier. AT&T has had an exclusive contract for the phone in the United States until now.
The phone’s arrival at Verizon Wireless comes not a moment too soon: In the past year, sales of phones running Android, Google’s mobile operating system, and available at all four major carriers, have steadily been eating into the iPhone’s market.
Word of Tuesday’s announcement was indicated earlier today by Wilson Rothman, msnbc.com’s deputy science and technology editor, who noted the invite sent by Lowell McAdam, Verizon president and COO. Wrote Rothman:
“After a week of high-level Verizon Wireless announcements surrounding the carrier’s launch of 4G LTE, we get yet another invitation, this time to an event sharing ‘the latest news’ hosted by a bigger cheese than any of the super high level guys here at CES in Las Vegas. So what is it? We assume that Apple will announce the Verizon iPhone before Verizon does, but seriously, Verizon? If this thing isn’t an iPhone, you are going to have an angry mob on your hands. We love LTE, but bring it out already!”
In survey after survey over the past three-plus years, iPhone users haven’t had a lot of complaints, but AT&T’s exclusivity and service has been among them. The carrier has been working furiously to improve its network, especially in the past year.
Despite that, Consumer Reports said last month that AT&T is the “lowest-scoring cell-phone carrier in the U.S., according to a satisfaction survey of 58,000 ConsumerReports.org readers. Of all the carriers rated, AT&T was the only one to drop significantly in overall satisfaction.”
More than half of survey respondents with AT&T owned “some verison of the iPhone,” Consumer Reports said. The magazine’s data, “reflecting all versions of the phone, found that iPhone owners were much less satisfied with their carrier and rated data service (Web and e-mail) lower than owners of smart phones on other carriers that, like the iPhone, have a host of apps to encourage heavy data use.
“Our survey suggests that an iPhone from Verizon Wireless, which is rumored, could indeed be good news for iPhone fans,” said Paul Reynolds, the magazine’s electronics editor.
